Out of the void into the shimmering blue
Voyagers sang one more encore to old me and you.
Emissaries, sent out to find and be found,
Bidding goodbye to their home audience, skyward bound.
Back on the ground planners and doers and spies
Turn up their gaze, solar winds in their eyes.
Thirty-odd years counted down this ancient bond
Until the day Voyagers went beyond.
From long ago those in the ‘Lands of the Free’
Brought up their kids to proudly use their own eyes to see,
Love and discern, banish all cruelty and fraud,
In doing so try to embody a “Father God”.
And so they clawed glory and joy from their doom,
Nature itself, sharing a rich heirloom.
In nurturing art and living science it showed.
Grace bubbled up, sparkled and overflowed.
Out of the blue into the shimmering void
Voyagers swerved, each a prim Fabergé asteroid
Bearing inside treasures of talent and time,
Music and thought, culture, biology, grease and grime.
Long past their prime they’ll pass new sunny frontiers –
If not for now or forty thousand years.
Dear Voyager, gone like a flag from its pole,
Are you to fly or fossilise our soul?
Don’t you know, there’s a universe all homespun.
Voyager One, Voyager Two,
There’s Me
In you.
